Hayes - Tilden "Stolen Election" Ticket, A Rarity!
Ticket/Invitation

Congressional Hearings ticket issued after the hotly contested 1876 U.S. presidential election between Rutherford B. Hayes (1822-1893) and Samuel J. Tilden (1814-1886). Ticket no. 567, dated February 23, 1877, admitted the bearer into the Gallery of the House of Representatives, where "Counting the Vote for President and Vice-President" proceedings could be observed. On blue heavy stock, and signed in facsimile by Thomas W. Ferry, President pro tempore of the Senate, and Samuel J. Randall, Speaker of the House. Some weathering evidence of mounting on verso, else near fine. 4.75" x 3".

The presidential election of November 7, 1876, ended without a clear winner due to widespread allegations of voter fraud and technical irregularities in both the popular vote and the Electoral College. Democratic candidate Samuel J. Tilden, then Governor of New York, had secured more than 50% of the popular vote. However, both he and his Republican opponent, Ohio Governor Rutherford B. Hayes, faced accusations of corrupt voting practices. Additionally, 20 Electoral College votes were disputed because of inconsistencies such as the submission of conflicting vote sets and the involvement of ineligible electors.

In response, an Electoral Commission composed of eight Republicans and seven Democrats was formed in January 1877 to investigate the contested results. After a month of congressional hearings, the commission awarded the disputed votes to Hayes, securing his presidency with a narrow Electoral College victory of 185 to 184, despite losing the popular vote by 250,000. This decision was part of the Compromise of 1877, in which Hayes promised to withdraw federal troops from the Reconstruction South, but it left him without a clear mandate to govern.
