Archive
A collection of items and works related to physician Havelock Ellis, who is most known for studying human sexuality. Totaling four items in all, London, England, ranging in date from 1921 to 1931. Consisting of (1) ALS with a signed sketch, (1) signed limited edition book, and another unsigned featuring a collection of Ellis' musings. Please see below for additional information on contents and condition.

The lot includes:

1.) Autograph letter signed "Havelock Ellis" at conclusion, 1p, 7" x 9", London, England, dated April 5, 1931. Together with a 5" x 8" pencil sketch, apparently of Ellis, which he signs in the bottom margin. The letter subsequently compliments the artist, one Miss Browne, on her talents despite having no formal training, and discusses portraiture based off of photographs. Very good condition, with faint age toning and numerous small punctures present along perimeter.

2.) "Concerning Jude the Obscure" by Havelock Ellis. London: The Ulysses Bookshop, 1931. Limited edition, no. 103 of 185. Signed by the author on the limitations page, with an additional inscription to one John Gawsworth on the title page. Featuring the bookplate of John McClelland on inside front cover. Good condition, with bumping to edges and corners; dark damp staining present to lower third throughout. An additional slip affixed to the rear pastedown explaining how Gawsworth, a poet, acted as Ellis's amanuensis for the last years of his life and edited a number of his publications. Enemy action during the Blitz resulted in almost complete destruction of Gawsworth's library, and the few books that survived were smoke and water damaged.

3.) "Impressions and Comments, Second Series 1914-1920" by Havelock Ellis. London: Constable and Company Ltd., 1921. Octavo, 248 pages. Unsigned. Bound in blue cloth with gold lettering at spine. With fading and light soiling to boards; evident rubbing to edges and corners. Very good.

Havelock Ellis (1859-1939) was an English physician, eugenicist, writer, progressive intellectual and social reformer who studied human sexuality. He co-wrote the first medical textbook in English on homosexuality in 1897, and also published works on a variety of sexual practices and inclinations, as well as on transgender psychology. Ellis' other contributions include the development of the notions of narcissism and autoeroticism, later adopted by Sigmund Freud and his fellow psychoanalysts.
