Harry Truman ALS, Magazine & Ticket From Westminster College Lectures on Hysteria and Presidential Papers
Archive
An autograph letter signed by President Harry Truman with a booklet and ticket relating to his lecture engagement at Westminster College. The letter is 1p, measuring 6.5" x 8.75", Kansas City, Missouri, dated April 20, 1954. Signed "Harry Truman" and addressed to Mrs. William W. Hall, it thanks the recipient for her hospitality in Fulton a few days prior. Written on personal letterhead. The letter is accompanied by an issue of the "Westminster Report", April 1954, Vol. XXXVI - No. 4. The issue features a two-page spread of black and white images of Truman during his visit to Westminster College to deliver that year's John Findley Green Lectures. Also included is a lecture admittance ticket, dated April 12, 1954. The letter has flattened folds and uneven toning and mat burn. Bold, large signature. The magazine is lightly toned with faint corner and edge wear. The ticket has uneven toning throughout. Very good overall.

Truman visited Fulton, Missouri in April 1954 to deliver two speeches, entitled "What Hysteria Does to Us" and "Presidential Papers, Their Importance as Historical Documents." The crux of his first speech was a historical recounting—from Salem to McCarthyism—of American "mob excitement, stirred by false or exaggerated charges, resulting in injury to innocent people." Though he never mentioned Joseph McCarthy by name, Truman made clear that an unhappy by-product of the Cold War was a civil war within the United States over freedom of thought and inquiry.
