Harry S. Truman Signed Whistle-Stop Reelection Campaign Presentation Photo
Signed photograph
A vintage presentation photograph showing 33rd U.S. Harry S. Truman (1884-1972) speaking from the rear of the presidential railroad car "Ferdinand Magellan," inscribed, signed, and dated by Truman afterwards as "To Harry McLaughlin / Kind regards / Harry S Truman / 3 - 8 - 1965" at the bottom. N.p. The glossy sepia-colored photograph is hand-stamped several times verso with two press copyright stamps belonging to the photograph dedicatee, Harry J. McLaughlin (1922-2007), a longtime Pennsylvania journalist; one of the two stamps reads "Harry McLaughlin / York Bureau / Patriot-News Co. / 225 S. George St. / York, PA." Expected surface wear including isolated scuffs, and minor feathering to the pen inscription. Light mounting traces and pencil-inscription verso. Else near fine. 2.625" x 3.875."

The photograph of Truman speaking was originally taken during the president's 1948 whistle-stop reelection campaign, in which the president traveled over 20,000 miles by railway, delivering nearly 350 speeches along the way. There were many photo opportunities from Truman's podium at the rear balustrade of the 1929 Pullman passenger car "Ferdinand Magellan," including the ironic photograph of Truman holding aloft the newspaper headlined "Dewey Defeats Truman."

The recipient of Truman's signed photograph was presidential and celebrity autograph collector Harry McLaughlin. McLaughlin was a reporter for over 70 years at various publications, large and small. He managed the editorial desk of the York Bureau of the Harrisburg "Patriot-News" until his retirement in 1987.
