Description:

Truman Harry

Harry S. Truman Exceptional Signed Photograph "Dewey Defeats Truman,"

10" x 7.25" semi-glossy black and white press photograph of 33rd U.S. President Harry S. Truman (1884-1972) ironically holding up a newspaper reporting his defeat in the 1948 presidential election, signed and personally dedicated by him as "To Alexander F. Nahas / From Harry S. Truman" near bottom. Stamped verso. A few expected wrinkles, else near fine. Accompanied by the original free franked transmittal envelope dispatched from the Harry S. Truman Library in Independence, Missouri, signed "Harry S. Truman" in the postage zone.

The official United Press International photograph is stamped with a rights and reproductions blurb verso, and is accompanied by the following caption typed on yellow newsprint: "STL 885941…NEW YORK BUREAU 'AIN'T THE WAY I HEARD IT' ST. LOUIS, MO.: This photo of President Harry S. Truman laughing as he holds an early edition of the Chicago Tribune for Nov. 4th 1948, was taken by United Press staff photographer Frank Cancellare. The newspaper, whose headline jumped to the erroneous conclusion as early election results came in, was shown to HST as he stopped here during his victorious return trip to Washington, D.C. CREDIT…UPI 11/4/48."

The original transmittal envelope that once contained the signed photograph has "Harry S. Truman / Independence, Missouri  64050" listed in the return address label. Free franked printed signature at upper right. The envelope is folded in the middle and letter-opened at right, else very good to near fine.

Democratic candidate and presidential incumbent President Truman, who had assumed the office following FDR's death in April 1945, was not expected to win the 1948 presidential election. He faced off against the favorite, Republican candidate and New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey (1902-1971), and Dixiecrat Party candidate and South Carolina Governor Strom Thurmond (1902-2203). Truman handily defeated the other two candidates by securing 303 Electoral College votes and over 24,000,000 popular votes. The Chicago Daily Tribune, a right-leaning newspaper, published this incorrect first issue banner headline on November 3, 1948.

Alexander F. Nahas (1920-2016) was born in Marseilles to a missionary family. He later lived in Danbury, Connecticut and became a merchant marine and government bureaucrat.

Recent similar auction returns fetched the following prices:

-Swann 2018: $10,625

-Sotheby's 2013: $21,250

-Heritage 2013: $10,150

-Christies 2005: $10,200

-Spink-Shreves 2000: $7,560

While these prices are impressive, we feel that our photo is superior to any of the above. Among the reasons for this are the condition of the photo; the fact that the photo is an original contemporary press photo with appropriate markings; and the fact that is the only one that includes the original transmittal envelope free franked by Truman with printed signature.
