Description:

Lee Harper 1926 - 0 Harper Lee, author of To Kill A Mockingbird and champion of racial equality writes important commentary on Hitler and the holocaust!

ALS on Harper Lee's personal letterhead, four pages with one side left blank, 5.25" x 7.5",dated"17 April '09", signed"I love you, Nelle", to her close friend and New York neighbor, Bruce Higgison. In her letter, Harper Lee references her feelings about Hitler, the Holocaust, and the Pope, ending with"I ramble. You are bored." Accompanied by her handwritten envelope. Near fine condition.

A wonderfully revealing look at some hot topics from this Pulitzer prize winning author, showing her passionate, spunky side. In part:"Maybe I am prejudiced, but I don't think much of German shepherds (you are too young - hell, you weren't even born!) I shall never forget how quickly the Germans forgave themselves after the war. In the history of the present generation, Hitler never happened."

"The new abp (arch bishop)looks jolly enough but guess he will follow the Pope's order ... At any rate there may be enough Irish abps (arch bishops) to head off[Pope] Benedict!"

Bruce and Harper Lee frequently corresponded during her long visits back to her hometown in Alabama. Bruce would religiously keep Nelle tied into the New York gossip scene, however at the time of this letter she may have moved permanently, perhaps writing from her nursing home in Alabama. Nelle had a deep and frequent connection with Bruce that spanned many years.
