Lee Harper

Harper Lee, author of To Kill A Mockingbird, writes from Lake Shore Hospital, thanking her close friend

ALS on a lined note page, 8.5" x 11", signed "Much love…/Nelle", accompanied by her handwritten envelope, signed by her as "Lee" on the verso along with her return address. Expected folds, slight chipping along top edge, else near fine.

A wonderful ALS by Harper Lee, dated "1 Oct", signed "Much love to you and so many thanks, /Nelle", to her close friend and New York neighbor, Bruce Higgison. Harper Lee frequently corresponded with Bruce during her long visits back to her hometown in Alabama during which time Bruce would keep Nelle tied into the New York gossip scene. However, at the time of this letter Harper Lee was in the Lake Shore Hospital in Birmingham, Alabama. Her warm, thankful note acknowledges her frequent close connection to Bruce, as shown in the letter stating

"Thank you for getting the [illegible crew to sign the get-well card and of course sending it-you are a sweetheart./But that is something I've known always--/Could you please pass this along to Nick or Joe (or whoever can read) and thank them muchly…/Please call--usually about 8:00 P.M. (CST) and I will be settled for the day. Much love to you and so many thanks,/Nelle".

Accompanied by the her handwritten envelope with the return address of "Lee - Lake Shore Hosp. B'ham, AL"

A wonderful revealing look at the very quiet last years from this Pulitzer prize winning author, showing her very close connection with her long time friend.
