Description:

Lee Harper 1926 - 2016

Harper Lee, author of "To Kill A Mockingbird", writes her ornithologist friend about birds, and also reference "Hebrews 13.8".

ALS on Harper Lee's personal letterhead, double sided page, 5.25" x 7.5", signed "Nelle", accompanied by her handwritten envelope, noting her friend as "Mr. Bruce Higgison (ornithologist)". Near fine condition.

A wonderful ALS by Harper Lee, dated "12 June (I think!)", signed "most grateful/Nelle", to her close friend and New York neighbor, Bruce Higgison. Harper Lee frequently corresponded with Bruce during her long visits back to her hometown in Alabama, during which time Bruce would keep Nelle tied into the New York gossip scene. However, at the time of these letters she may have moved permanently, perhaps writing from her nursing home in Alabama. Nelle writes to Bruce expressing both excitement about his birds, but also lamenting about her rather quite life stating "The birds are terrific - I can't believe you are raising them out at Montauk - you are so good to me that I wept tears when I got your last bankrupting mailing-...It's Hebrews 13.8 here, so no more from your most grateful/Nelle".

A wonderful personal note from this Pulitzer prize-winning author providing some insight into her later years.
