Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales, Three Original Pen & Ink Drawings by British Illustrator Helen Stratton

3 original pen and ink illustrations on board depicting scenes from Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale "What the Moon Saw" by British illustrator Helen Stratton (1867-1961), each signed with the artist's "HS" monogram. The 3 illustrations were likely published in the 1899 First Edition The Fairy Tales of Hans Christian Andersen published by George Newnes by arrangement with Archibald Constable & Company. Each illustration captioned, and inscribed with copious notes in pencil recto and verso. Each also inscribed "A Constable & Co." In near fine condition, with expected light weathering. 2 of the 3 illustrations measure 7.125" x 9.25".

Hans Christian Andersen's What the Moon Saw and Other Tales was first published in London in 1866. The main character of the eponymous fairytale is the Moon, who befriends a homesick boy and tells him wonderful stories over the course of thirty-two evenings.

Stratton's unnumbered illustration of the bearded man gazing into a shaving stand depicts a scene from the 18th Evening. This story describes a suicidal actor mocked by theatergoers, who "looked at his pale face in the glass with eyes half closed to see if he should look well as a corpse."

Illustration #371 depicts a scene from the 30th Evening, in which a baited bear carouses with children. Corresponding to the line "'We're playing at soldiers!,'" Stratton depicts the moment when the bear and children  are discovered by the bear tamer and the children's mother.

The last of Stratton's handsome illustrations shows a scene from the 32nd Evening. The Moon explains, "I peep into the room between the curtain and the window frame" to watch children engage in their bedtime rituals. Stratton has depicted a girl undressing.

Hans Christian Andersen is most celebrated for producing 3,300+ fairytales including perennial favorites like "The Little Mermaid" and "The Ugly Duckling." Yet Andersen also wrote plays, poetry, novels, and travel accounts. His last collection of children's stories was published in 1872.

Helen Stratton was a prolific illustrator who published many of her works in turn-of-the-century children's books. She is most closely associated with the Art Nouveau movement and the Glasgow School of Art.
