Hans Christian Andersen CDV and Signed Envelope Fragment, Handsomely Presented

A carte de visite depicting beloved Danish fairytale author Hans Christian Andersen (1805-1875) and an envelope fragment signed and inscribed in Andersen's hand are handsomely matted and framed behind glass. In near fine condition overall. The sight size of the carte de visite is 2.375" x 4" while the overall frame size is 13.125" x 17". Not examined out of the mahogany finished frame with gilt filet.

The envelope fragment was addressed to Andersen's friend and colleague the Boston publisher Horace E. Scudder (1838-1902) in the winter of 1872. Bearing philatelic markings and postmarks from København [Copenhagen (February 3-4), London (February 12, 1872), and New York (February 25). Addressed in Andersen's hand to "Horace E. Scudder Esq., New York Riverside-Cambridge Mass." and signed by him as "(from Hans Christian Andersen)" below. Trimmed, and with minor repairs affecting the lower left corner.

The black and white carte de visite was produced by Danish photography studio Hansen, Schou & Weller sometime after their 1869 business partnership. Inscribed in another hand as "Hans C. Anderson" above its printed caption at bottom. Crisp.

Horace E. Scudder was a successful journalist, biographer, editor, and publisher whose Riverside Magazine for Young People: An Illustrated Monthly (1867-1870) published a few of Andersen's works for the first time. Scudder too wrote children's books. His ample correspondence with Andersen was collected by Danish-American actor Jean Hersholt and released by the University of California at Berkeley in 1948.

Hans Christian Andersen is most celebrated for producing 3,300+ fairytales including perennial favorites like "The Little Mermaid" and "The Ugly Duckling." Yet Andersen also wrote plays, poetry, novels, and travel accounts. His last collection of children's stories was published in 1872, when he suffered a serious fall and began to show signs of liver cancer.
