Helen Adams Keller (1880-1968) was an American author, disability rights advocate, political activist and lecturer. Born in West Tuscumbia, Alabama, she lost her sight and her hearing after a bout of illness at the age of 19 months. At age 7, Keller met beloved teacher and lifelong companion Anne Mansfield Sullivan (1866-1936), who taught her to read, write, and speak using various methods. Keller would later begin a career of writing, lecturing, and touring around the world to advocate for people with disabilities.

Sophia Crocker Hopkins (1843-1917) was a mentor to Anne Sullivan while she was the housemother at the Perkins School for the Blind in South Boston, where Keller studied between 1888 and 1892.
