A facsimile map of George Washington's Mount Vernon Estate. Measuring 21.75" x 15.75" (sight), Mount Vernon, 1945. Entitled "George Washington's Map of His Mount Vernon Estate, Drawn by Him in 1793 and Based On His Own Surveys"  The scale of the map is 1 inch to 100 poles [a pole being a rod or 10/2 feet]. Framed to the overall size of 24" x 17.75". The map has light age toning throughout. It has been printed with the original map's fold lines, soiling, and dampstaining visible. Some wear and chipping to the frame. Overall very good.

This facsimile map was published by the Mount Vernon Ladies' Association in 1945. Original copyright by the Huntington Library, San Marino, California, 1931. In the hand of George Washington with two inlaid boxes. The map shows the whole estate of more than 8,077 acres, and, in the case of four of the farms (comprising 3,260 acres), the table in the upper right-hand corner indicates the individual fields, meadows, clover lots, pastures, and orchards.

George Washington, then President of the United States, was living in Philadelphia [then the capital city], but was in close contact with affairs at Mount Vernon. Agriculture in Virginia at this time was not flourishing, with once prospering tobacco fields being replaced by other crops. Planters were forced to divide their lands into farms and adopt new methods for business. At the time, Washington was corresponding upon farming matters with Arthur Young, the distinguished agriculturist, of Bradfield Hall, near Bury in Suffolk, England. Three years later, in 1796, Washington had still not managed to rent his outlying farms, and made several more copies of his estate map for potential interested parties. The Huntington Library map is considered to be the oldest of the half-dozen possible versions by Washington and the only one of them that is known to have been preserved.
