Description:

Haile Selassie
[London, England], ca. 1930s
Haile Selassie, Exiled Ethiopian Emperor, Signed Photo, With Bonus Contemporary Photo Postcard
Signed photo
Two photographs of exiled Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie (1892-1975), featuring one portrait signed by Selassie in Amharic, and one gelatin silver print photo postcard. Ca. 1930s. [London, England.] In both images, Selassie is depicted wearing his signature black cloak. Near fine.

Emperor Haile Selassie had fled Ethiopia in May 1936 in advance of Italian forces declaring the country as part of a new empire, Italian East Africa. Selassie spent the majority of his exile from 1936-1941 in England, where he directed fundraising efforts earmarked for the Ethiopian liberation movement and Ethiopian refugees. The photo postcard dates from Selassie's English exile, ca. 1937, and the portrait probably also does.

The lot is comprised of:

1. An oval-shaped portrait of Selassie, likely a contemporary black and white magazine or book plate, signed by him in Amharic at left, and captioned "His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I. Emperor of Ethiopia." at right. The signed photograph is neatly cropped and mounted on a piece of black stock paper. Isolated minor wrinkles and scuffs, else near fine. Measures approximately 6.125" x 4.5."

2. A contemporary gelatin silver print photo postcard showing Selassie in London in 1937. The blank reverse has been pencil-inscribed by a former collector. In the Correspondence section, the collector has indicated: "Snapshot which won / the photographic / competition of / Golders Green / 1937 / Taken by B.L. Benson." In the Address panel, the collector has inscribed: "L. to R. Foreign Minister Herouy [sic] / The Emperor / Miss Pankhurst." Pencil-inscribed "1937" recto. Expected light scuffs. Mounting traces verso. 3.5" x 5.5."

The collector is referring to Heruy Wolde Selassie (1878-1938), who served as the Foreign Minister of Ethiopia from 1930-1936, following the Emperor into English exile; and also to Sylvia Pankhurst (1882-1960), the human rights activist, who became one of the Emperor's most ardent Western supporters. Pankhurst was invited to live in Ethiopia in 1956 by the reinstated Emperor and died there.
