Description:

Longfellow Henry

H.W. Longfellow Statue Financed by Portland, Maine Residents

Membership document from the Longfellow Statue Association, a Portland, Maine-based organization dedicated to fundraising for a statue depicting their famous native son, the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1807-1882). The partly printed and partly handwritten document was signed by association officials and dated February 25, 1888 at lower left. The document features a portrait of Longfellow encircled by oak leaves at center, and flanked by the second and last stanzas of his poem "My Lost Youth". Docketed verso. Expected folds, isolated edge darkening and a few chips. Some light bleed-through at top, else very good. 11.25" x 8".

The Neo-Classical inspired cast-bronze statue depicting the poet was designed by two artists with Portland connections; Franklin Simmons, who did the sculpture, and Francis Fassett, who did the base. The statue of Longfellow cost $17,000 and was financed largely through small donations (the donors' names can be found in a container sealed into the base.) The statue, which can still be seen in Portland's Longfellow Square, was dedicated in September 1888 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990.

Longfellow is best known for lyrical poetry like "Evangeline: A Tale of Acadie" (1847) and "The Song of Hiawatha" (1855).

Statue Association member Charles J. Chapman (born 1848) was a respected Portland businessman and civic leader who graduated from Bowdoin College in 1868.
