Description:

H.S. Truman Signed Presidential Library Booklet

A booklet entitled "The Harry S. Truman Library," boldly signed by former 33rd U.S. President Harry S. Truman (1884-1972), as "Harry S Truman" in blue ink above his facsimile signature on the booklet's front cover. N.d., but the U.S. Government Publishing Office code "1958" located on the back cover suggests a date range of the late 1950s. Lightly toned. Isolated minor discolored spots and water stains, including some affecting Truman's large signature, else good to very good. 6pp including the front and back covers. 6" x 8.5."

The informational booklet was printed contemporaneously with the dedication of the "Harry S. Truman Library" (today known as the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum) in Truman's hometown Independence, Missouri on July 6, 1957. The first presidential library of its kind to be created under the provisions of the 1955 Presidential Libraries Act, the Harry S. Truman Library and Museum "was established to preserve the papers, books, and historical mementos of former President Truman; to make them available to the people in a place suitable for study and research; and to provide a center to stimulate public interest in American history and government" (p. 1).

The booklet cites facts and figures about the museum, and discusses some of the collection highlights, such as a monumental Persian rug presented to Truman by the Shah of Iran; a Torah similarly presented by Israeli President Chaim Weizmann; and Truman's collection of Bibles. The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum has undergone two expansion campaigns in 1968 and 1980 respectively, and now houses over 15 million pages of manuscript pages; 10,000 books; and 32,000 objects in its 100,000 square feet facility. Sound recordings, photographs, and film round out the collection.

Harry S. Truman served as president between Roosevelt's death in April 1945 to January 1953.
