Hiram Percy Maxim (1869-1936) was an engineer, scientist, and American radio pioneer. He is credited with inventing and selling the first commercially successful firearm silencer, and with developing mufflers for internal combustion engines. In early 1895, Maxim visited Albert Augustus Pope in Hartford, Connecticut, which led to his being hired for the Motor Vehicle Division of the Pope Manufacturing Company. He earned patents for his inventions in automotive design, noise abatement, and other fields. Maxim’s broadly recognized achievements brought fame to Hartford, where he made his home from 1899 until his death in 1936.

Albert Augustus Pope (1843-1909) was a transportation pioneer and founder of the Pope Manufacturing Company. Pope’s life found direction after he attended the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia where he saw his first bicycle. He soon acquired the American rights to the patents. Thereafter, Pope actively and aggressively pursued the rights to as many bicycle patents as possible, thus limiting other American bicycle manufacturer's abilities to make a profit. Pope also invented ball bearings in all moving parts of the bicycles, as well as hollow steel tubes used in the cycles frame. He invested much of his time in promoting the bicycle industry, through clubs, races and more. In 1878, the company introduced the Columbia High Wheeler bicycle. Until 1896, The Pope Manufacturing Company was the leader amongst United States bicycle producers.
