Description:

Hoover Herbert

H. Hoover 2 Letters, Nice Content Regarding FDR, the New Deal, & Hiram Johnson

Two 1p typed letters, 1940-1941, each signed by former 31st U.S. President Herbert Hoover (1874-1964) as "Herbert Hoover". The March 8, 1941 letter also includes two words inscribed in Hoover's hand. Hoover addressed both letters to his friend, Dr. Robert Alway Peers of Colfax, California; the lot also includes Dr. Peers's replies.

In this chain of correspondence, Hoover and Dr. Peers discuss their mutual objections to FDR, the Democratic Party, and the New Deal. The first set of letters obliquely refers to "disgusting things" that recently happened in Philadelphia, which could relate to the Democratic National Convention held there in July 1940. Former Governor of California and then Senator of California Hiram Johnson (1866-1945) is also discussed. Johnson had abandoned fellow Republican Herbert Hoover ahead of the 1932 presidential race and initially supported FDR and the New Deal. Later, however, Johnson distanced himself from FDR after the latter attempted to enlarge the Supreme Court and showed a willingness to join World War II.

The lot includes:

1. 1p typed letter signed by Hoover as "Herbert Hoover". Written at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City on September 25, 1940. On watermarked cream stationery with "Herbert Hoover" embossed in black at top. Expected light paper folds. Else near fine. 7.25" x 10.5".

In part: "I could talk reams to you about the disgusting things that are going on around here. But it will fill you with humor to know that Hiram is just as indignant as I am at what took place…"

2. 1p typed letter signed by Hoover as "Herbert Hoover". Written at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City on March 8, 1941. Hoover has handwritten "of trouble!" at the conclusion of the last sentence. On watermarked cream stationery with "Herbert Hoover" embossed in black at top. Expected light paper folds. Pencil inscribed at top in another hand, probably Dr. Peers's. Else near fine. 7.25" x 10.5".

"My old Friend", Hoover wrote Dr. Peers, "Here is the sort of preposterous letter that rather appeals to both my sense of humor and the fellow's hard luck…"

Also including Dr. Peers's responses to Hoover's letters. Very good condition overall, with light expected folds and wrinkles.

3. 2pp typed carbon copy of Dr. Peers's October 4, 1940 letter to Hoover addressed to the latter at Stanford University. In part: "The New Deal is the enemy not only of the members of the Republican Party but of all Americans and of the American way of life and of the American philosophy of Government."

4. 1p typed carbon copy, dated March 14, 1941, discussing a local grievance probably falling under Dr. Peers's purview as mayor of Colfax, California.

Hoover's correspondent, Dr. Robert Alway Peers (1875-1970), was a Canadian émigré who relocated to Colfax, a town in northern California located about halfway in between Sacramento and Carson City, Nevada, in the early twentieth-century. Dr. Peers became a world-renowned specialist in tuberculosis treatment. He also served as the mayor of Colfax between 1922-1945.
