Description:

H. Clay Jugate Scarce Currier Color Lithograph, "Grand National Whig Banner"

A color lithograph entitled "'Onward': Grand National Whig Banner" (New York, New York: Nathaniel Currier, 1844), showing Whig Party presidential candidate Henry Clay (1777-1852) and running mate Theodore Frelinghuysen (1787-1862) framed by laurel leaf wreaths and crowned by a flag-carrying American eagle at top. Additional triumphant banners proclaim "Justice to Harry of the West" and "Henry Clay. The Nation's President & T. Frelinghuysen. Choice for Vice President." Publication information is found at bottom. Minor mostly even toning, along with scattered foxing and edge wear. Isolated surface retouching to scattered areas of yellow and red, else near fine. A lovely vintage piece of Americana. 13" x 16."

By the early 1840s, Henry Clay had more than thirty years of political experience, garnered at both a state and a national level. Clay was a well-known figure in Washington, D.C., having served as Secretary of State to John Quincy Adams, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, and a Senator from Kentucky. While it was no surprise, then, that Clay was nominated as the Whig Party presidential candidate in 1844, the selection of his running mate, Theodore Frelinghuysen, was unexpected. Frelinghuysen was a Senator from New Jersey who alienated many Southerners by vocally opposing Jacksonian Indian Removal policies.

Ultimately, Clay and Frelinghuysen were narrowly defeated by Democratic candidates James K. Polk and George Dallas. Unphased by this defeat, Clay would try and fail to secure the Whig presidential nomination again in 1848.
