Description:

Lincoln Abraham 1809 - 1865 Gutzon Borglum signs great photo showing his process with Lincoln at Mt. Rushmore

A 7" x 5" photo, signed and inscribed "Gutzon Borglum" bottom right. Photo is stamped verso "Charles d'Emery of Manugian Studios, South Norwalk, Conn"., along with additional penciled hand written notes in another hand translating the front inscription. Near fine.

A spectacular B&W photo showing the creating and sculpting of the head of Lincoln at Mount Rushmore. The image shows the detailed scaffolding set up required to sculpt this significant monument. Inscribed and signed by the sculptor, Gutzon Borglum in full: " Greetings to Mrs. Winterbuller, Sincerely, Gutzon Borglum/ 1940" Gutzon passed away the following year and his son, Lincoln Borglum, took over construction to complete the project. Borglum was not a novice to sculpting Lincoln. Prior to his designing and sculpting Mount Rushmore, Borglum had carved a monumental bust of Lincoln in 1908 which was donated to the Congress by Eugene Meyer, Jr. and accepted by the Joint Committee on the Library in the same year. Today the Lincon bust is currently displayed in the Crypt at the center of the Capitol, along with bronze casts of same in several significant collections, including on display in the White House.
