Gum Magnate W. Wrigley Gifts Florence Harding Four Boxes of Chewing Gum! What a Fun Grouping!
TLS

A highly unique grouping which includes a typed letter signed, dated November 19, 1923, Chicago, Illinois, by William Wrigley Jr., the famed chewing gum magnate on Wrigley's official stationary. Wrigley writes to Florence Kling Harding, former First Lady and widow of President Warren G. Harding. Wrigley sends Mrs. Harding four boxes of chewing gum, and states he was unsure whether the former first lady favored the same flavors as President Harding. On the reverse side, Florence Harding has handwritten a response in pencil, expressing gratitude for the gum and making a witty remark about its recipients. In fine condition with some toning and fringing to edge, boldly signed by Wrigley. The letter measures 6.25" x 7.5." Accompanied by five packets of Wrigley's chewing gum.

Transcription of William Wrigley Jr.'s Typed Letter (Front Side):

"My dear Mrs. Harding:

Yours of November 9th to hand.

I hardly thought it was likely you could get away to go to California, but both Mrs. Wrigley and I were anxious to have you, provided you could arrange it. However, your trip with us is simply delayed until sometime when it is convenient.

Saw Fred a day or two ago, and he remarked that Mrs. Harding was out of chewing gum. I do not know whether you favor P.K. the same as the President did or not, so I am sending you two boxes of the four brands, and those you don't want you can give away to some children.

Sincerely yours,
(Signed in blue ink) "Wm. Wrigley Jr."

Transcription of Florence Harding's Handwritten Response (Back Side):

"Many thanks for yours of Nov. 19, also for the packages of P.K. If I give any away, I apprehend they will go to children of a voting age. You have been kind, as always, and I am appreciative. By the way, I wish you would drop me a line when you have time about the new *over* distribution of stock, of which I have heard. With regards to Mrs. W[rigley] & yourself, I am—"
