Guglielmo Marconi, Nobel Prize Laureate Reflects on the Death of his Former First Assistant
TLS

Guglielmo Marconi (1874-1937). Typed letter signed "G Marconi" extending thanks for condolences on the death of G.S. Kemp his First Assistant in their famed first tests of trans-Atlantic radio transmission, 1p bifolium, on Reale Accademia D'Italia letterhead, 6.5" x 8.5", Rome, Italy, January 7, 1933. Light toning, else fine. Boldly signed.

Marconi writes to a Mr. Denison Pender thanking him for his letter conveying condolences on the death of contemporary scientist and colleague of Marconi, Mr. G.S. Kemp. It reads in part: "The sad news was indeed a great shock to me: it reached me only a few days after I had spoken to Him in the usual jovial manner; He was so full of life and enthusiastic over his work! Poor fellow. He was fit and strong enough to last a good deal longer."

Guglielmo Marconi was an Italian electrical engineer and inventor credited with inventing the radio and awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics, shared with Ferdinand Braun, in 1909. During the early years of radio invention during the 1890s and early 1900s, Marconi alongside his Chief Assistants G.S. Kemp and P.W. Paget pioneered wireless telegraphy aka radio transmission. Beyond his famed career in science, he also had a political career as a Senator in the Kingdom of Italy in 1914 and served in the Italian Royal Army during World War I. In 1929, he was ennobled as a marquess by King Victor Emmanuel III. He died after a series of heart attacks in 1937, just several years after this letter - reflecting on the death of his dear colleague - was written.
