"June 30, 1892

Thomas Roche Esq

My dear Sir:

I desire to express my sincere thanks to you, and through you to the Western Union Telegraph Company for the facilities of its lines, courteously furnished to me during the late Chicago Convention.

The thoughtfulness and kindness which thus afforded me constant information of Convention proceedings was most gratifying.

Yours very truly

Grover Cleveland."

The Democratic National Convention had taken place in Chicago a little over one week earlier, between June 21-June 23, 1892. Cleveland had been nominated on the first ballot over Iowa Governor Horace Boies and New York Senator David B. Hill.

The following fall, Cleveland would run against Republic Party nominee and presidential incumbent Benjamin Harrison. Cleveland handily won that election with 277 Electoral College votes and 46% of the popular vote.

Cleveland's correspondent was Thomas Roche (born 1846), who had served as a Boston district Superintendent since 1881. In Telegraphers of To-day: Descriptive, Historical, Biographical (New York: John B. Taltavall, 1893), Roche is described in glowing terms: "Mr. Roche is a man of great executive ability…His administration of the Western Union's affairs in new England has been characteristic of the man - vigorous and thorough" (p. 29-30). Grover Cleveland probably would have agreed!

Gray Gables was a rambling Cape Cod style farmhouse purchased by the Clevelands in 1890. The main house had a beachfront view, and Cleveland fished, hunted, and hiked throughout the 110-acre property. Cleveland resided here at the Summer White House during the summer months of 1893-1896.

Grover Cleveland is the only U.S. President to serve non-consecutive presidential terms, the first between 1885 and 1889, and the second between 1893-1897. A Democrat, Cleveland first became involved in politics in his early 30s, while serving as Sheriff of Erie County, New York, Mayor of Buffalo, and later Governor of New York.
