Grover Cleveland (1837-1908) is the only U.S. President to have served non-consecutive presidential terms, the first between 1885-1889, and the second between 1893-1897. A Democrat, Cleveland first became involved in politics in his early 1830s while serving as Sheriff of Erie County, New York. He was then Mayor of Buffalo, and later Governor of New York before winning the presidential election of 1884. Cleveland's first administration focused mainly on domestic issues such as meritocratic government promotions, the gold standard, and tariff reform. When he ran for reelection in 1888, Cleveland was defeated by Republican candidate Benjamin Harrison (1833-1901). In the four-year-period of Cleveland's return to civilian life, he worked for a New York City law firm and enjoyed vacationing in Cape Cod. The on-going currency debate kept Cleveland in the public eye during Harrison's presidency, and the Democratic champion was reelected in 1892. Cleveland's second administration was largely concerned with economic policy: recuperating from the Panic of 1893, stabilizing hard specie, attempting to reverse the McKinley Tariff, and subduing labor unrest.
