Grover Cleveland Presidential Appointment for Postmaster, 1885

Single page document signed, 17" x 14" as a Postmaster appointment. Dated "August 4, 1885," and signed by Grover Cleveland, "Grover Cleveland," as President. Co-signed by William Vilas as Postmaster General. Bright near fine document with a stunning bronze 3" saw toothed seal beautifully intact with the original red ribbon. Slight offsetting of the seal to the opposite side of the document.

The United States Postal System was established in July, 1775 by the second continental congress with the Office of the  Postmaster General created in 1789. It was not until the administration of Andrew Jackson that the Postmaster General was invited to sit on the president's cabinet. From 1872 to 1971, he was the head of the Post Office Department, an agency of the U.S. government in charge of postal service. It was not until 1971, that the Post Office Department was transformed into the United States Postal Service, an independent establishment of the executive branch of the Government of the United States.

This handsome and eloquent document has strong vibrant signatures, and has remained in extraordinary condition having been preserved lying flat within a large oversized book.
