Grover Cleveland initialed envelope from the Summer White House

Small cream envelope inscribed in the hand of sitting 24th U.S. President Grover Cleveland (1837-1908). Initialed by Cleveland as "Personal from G.C." in the lower left corner of the front panel. The envelope was postmarked from the Summer White House at Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts on August 25, 1893. Bearing a single carmine 2 cent George Washington stamp on the front and with stamped philatelic markings verso. Addressed to "Hon. Don M. Dickinson, Detroit, Michigan". In near fine condition, letter-opened at top and with light expected weathering. Pencil docketing along left edge. Envelope measures 4.625" x 3.625."

In August 1893, Grover Cleveland was 5 months into his second presidential term. He wrote this envelope from Gray Gables, the rambling Cape Cod style farmhouse that the Clevelands had purchased in 1890. The main house had a beachfront view, and Cleveland fished, hunted, and hiked throughout the 110-acre property. Cleveland resided here at the Summer White House during the warmer months of 1893-1896.

Cleveland's correspondent, Detroit lawyer and fellow Democrat Donald M. Dickinson (1846-1917), had supported both of Cleveland's presidential bids. President Cleveland later appointed his friend Postmaster General.

Grover Cleveland is the only U.S. President to serve non-consecutive presidential terms, the first between 1885 and 1889, and the second between 1893-1897. A Democrat, Cleveland first became involved in politics in his early 30s, while serving as Sheriff of Erie County, New York, Mayor of Buffalo, and later Governor of New York.
