Reading in full:
"Your letter of Aug. 21st, asking permission to name the club, about to be formed, the Cleveland Boys, came while I was away from home, and this is the first opportunity I have had to answer it. I freely give the consent you ask; and I certainly feel very much honored and pleased to have my name used in such a way. I don't know what the objects of the club are to be, but I know the son of my old friend, would not be engaged in anything of the kind, except for a good purpose. I hope your club will be very successful, and think it will be the means of great improvement to its members, in fitting them for the better performance of their duties, and citizens of the Empire state. I shall be glad to hear how you succeed, and render any assistance in my power."

We have been able to find very little on the "Cleveland Boys" club in New York, but it may perhaps be related to a club of which cropped up in California the following year in 1884. These boys, who were not of age and thus unable to vote, wished to organize themselves into group to aid Cleveland's campaign. This group of young Democrats also called their club "The Cleveland Boys" and practiced drilling under Captain Henry Murgotten.
