A letter to Samuel P. Curran concerning an intended gift of stock that Cleveland will not accept.

"Dear Sir

I received the letter which I enclose, to-day.

You spoke of some stock in a paper which you accidentally thought you enclosed. Nothing of the kind came with the letter and I am glad of it for I certainly would not consent to your donating it to me. I have no doubt you intended well, but this is no reason why you should give me any of the stock of your paper and I hope you will not further insist on doing so.

This letter is written to inform you that I have received no stock and that I should feel obliged to return it if it had come to my hand.

Yours truly

Grover Cleveland".

Cleveland was in between two non-consecutive terms as president of the United States; at the time he wrote this letter, the former president was residing in Marion, Massachusetts, where he rented a house for the summer during the late 1880s. Cleveland served as president of the United States from 1885 to 1889 and from 1892 to 1896.
