WHITE'S PHYSIOLOGICAL MANIKIN

Rare all original late 19th century antique American medical White's physiological "manikin" portable anatomical chart designed and patented in 1886 by James T. White & Co., New York.

Two folding wooden panels measuring 34.5 x 23.75", opening vertically to 68¾ x 23½", with chromolithographed flaps for both halves of torso, arms, hands, legs, feet, the head, as well as a large ear and large eye, opening to reveal various layers of a male human body, flaps held down with movable metal tabs. Slight staining to the back board, with expected use and resulting slight edgewear to the folding pieces.

A wonderful, nearly life-sized anatomical "manikin" used primarily by medical students, giving an internal view of the human body, including the muscles, tendons, arteries, bones, joints, digestive organs, heart, lungs, and reproductive organs. The brightly colored and highly detailed traveling folding lithographed anatomical plates were made from the drawings of Frank H. Hamilton, whose pen also appeared in the treatise on the "essentials of physiology and hygiene" that accompanied the manikin. The life-sized folding chart is of portable construction, adapted to the use of school-teachers and lecturers, as well as for private families. The whole display, when folded, is contained in a convenient-sized portfolio to carry in the hand. The chart was constructed to hang against the wall and contains a series hinged overlying leaves representing various parts of the system. Two accompanying works were published: The essentials of physiology and hygiene : a text-book to accompany White's physiological manikin / prepared under the supervision of Frank H. Hamilton ; illustrating the effects of alcohol and narcotics by colored plates, and by a series of microscopical sections, prepared under the authority of the State of New York by Francis Delafield and T. Mitchell Prudden (New York : James T. White and Co., 1886); and Explanatory index to accompany White's physiological manikin.

The importance of this chart cannot be overstated as human anatomy was finally reaching a breakthrough after years (centuries), of difficulty in obtaining the required subjects to allow medicine to study the human structure in order to propel medicine forward. This chart was published on about 30 years after the first publication of Grey's anatomy.

A delightful medical collectible. Would make a unique gift for a medical professional or a conversation piece for a school!
