Lot of four letters, comprises:

1) Autograph Letter Signed, "Horace Greeley", 1 p., on Office of The Tribune letterhead, October 10, 1863, New York, 5.25" x 8", to an unknown recipient regarding reevaluation of the candidacy of Mr. [Lucius] Robinson, an ally of Greeley's.  Accompanied by a lovely engraving of a seated Greeley.  Very faint folds, mounting remnant to verso right edge, else Fine condition.

Horace Greeley (1811-1872) was an American newspaper editor and publisher who was the founder and editor of the New York Tribune. Long active in politics, he served briefly as a congressman from New York and was the unsuccessful candidate of the new Liberal Republican Party in the 1872 presidential election against incumbent President Ulysses S. Grant, who won by a landslide.

2) Autograph Letter Signed, "Edward Everett", 1 p. front and verso, November 10, 1859, Boston, 5" x 7.25", to E.P. Pellet, declining his invitation to attend a celebratory event.  Minor separation at expected folds, toning, else near Fine condition.

Edward Everett (1794-1865) was an American politician, pastor, educator, diplomat, and orator from Massachusetts. Everett, as a Whig, served as U.S. Representative, U.S. Senator, the 15th Governor of Massachusetts, Minister to Great Britain, and United States Secretary of State. He also taught at Harvard University and served as its president.

3) Typed Letter Signed, "Alton B. Parker", 1 p., March 21, 1907, New York, 8.5" x 11", to the Honorable Grover Cleveland, with appreciation of "yourself as a man and of your career as an official".  Fine condition.

Alton Brooks Parker (1852-1926) was an American judge, best known as the Democrat who lost the presidential election of 1904 to incumbent Theodore Roosevelt.  A native of upstate New York, Parker practiced law in Kingston, New York, before being appointed to the New York Supreme Court and elected to the New York Court of Appeals, where he served as Chief Judge from 1898 until 1904, when he defeated liberal publisher William Randolph Hearst for the Democratic Party nomination for president of the United States.

4) Autograph Note Twice Signed, "Oliver Wendell Holmes" at the heading, and again, "O. W. H.", in conclusion, 1 p., November 15, 1874, Boston, 6.75" x 8.25", regarding seeing the son of "my old journeying friend" Samuel G. Howe, referring to his son, Henry M. Howe.  Minor creasing, scattered spots, toning, else near Fine.  

Oliver Wendell Holmes (1809-1894) was an American physician, poet, and polymath based in Boston. Grouped among the Fireside Poets, he was acclaimed by his peers as one of the best writers of the day. His most famous prose works are the "Breakfast-Table" series. He was also an important medical reformer. In addition to his work as an author and poet, Holmes also served as a physician, professor, lecturer and inventor and, although he never practiced it, he received formal training in law.

We insure through Berkley Asset Protection with rates of $.70 per $100 of value, among the lowest insurance rates in the industry. Our shipping department cameras document every package, both outgoing and incoming, for maximum security. In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.
