Frances Anne Kemble
[Philadelphia, PA], ca. 1863
Graphic Slavery Title with Important Content: "Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation"
Pamphlet/Booklet

A graphic anti-slavery pamphlet by Frances Anne Kemble titled "The Views of Judge Woodward and Bishop Hopkins on Negro Slavery at the South, Illustrated from the Journals of a Residence on a Georgia Plantation." [Privately printed in Philadelphia: George M. Stroud, 1863] 32pp. 5.5" x 8.5".. With woodcut illustration on the title page of a badly-beaten escaped slave Gordon, dubbed "Whipped Peter," based on the widely-circulated "scourged back" photograph used in the abolitionist movement. On verso is an advertisement for Kemble's other abolitionist work, "Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation, in 1838-1939." Superb example other than a small stain on the cover.

This first edition abolitionist pamphlet was an response to the pro-slavery speech by Judge George W. Woodward in 1860, and the 1861 pro-slavery letter by Episcopalian Bishop John H. Hopkins.

Frances Anne Kemble (1809-1893) was an English actress and writer. She married Pierce M. Butler, the owner of several plantations, and became an abolitionist based on her observations of the hundreds of enslaved people working there. Shocked by the working conditions and maltreatment of the slaves at the hand of the overseer, she wrote her anti-slavery tract "Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation, in 1838-1939." Kemble was forbidden to publish the title under threat of her husband to withhold access to her daughters, and waited to do so until 1863.
