Grandma Moses Signed Time Cover, Xmas Issue

A December 28, 1953 issue of Time Magazine (Volume LXII, Number 26) featuring folk artist Grandma Moses (1860-1961) on the front cover, signed by her as "Grand ma moses" at bottom right. With vividly colored and entirely intact front and back softcovers. Colored insets found within include half- and full-page reproductions of several of Moses's works. Expected wear to binding, overall light toning, and a few wrinkles and scuffs, else near fine. 60pp. 8.25" x 11".

The front cover, after an original illustration by popular magazine artist Boris Chaliapin (1904-1979), depicts Grandma Moses set against the backdrop of a snowy New England landscape. The primitivist painter is realistically depicted, with each detail of her graying hair, spectacles, lace collar, and black choker further adding to the Grandma Moses mystique. The cover is captioned: "Grandma Moses / 'Christmas is not just one day.'"

This issue of Time was published just a few days after Grandma Moses had celebrated her 94th Christmas. Time's Cover Story entitled "Presents from Grandma" appears under its "Art" category between p. 38-40. Besides providing a biographical sketch of the artist, the article ventures to explain the origins of Grandma Moses's popularity as an oracle of Americana. In it, Grandma Moses is quoted as saying, "I like to paint oldtimy things - something real pretty. Most of them are daydreams, as it were. I will say that I have did remarkable for one of my years and experience."

Grandma Moses, also known as Anna Mary Robertson Moses, began painting her signature primitive landscapes in her late 70s. She had always enjoyed artistic expression, ranging from paper doll making and quilting to yarn embroidery, but crippling arthritis finally pushed her into the fine arts in the 1930s. Her over 1,500 canvasses, heralded as "slice of life" paintings, fetched high prices among collectors and were exhibited by international museums. Her nostalgic images of nineteenth-century America rival Currier & Ives prints in their universal appeal and popularity.
