Governor Hancock First “Congress of the United States of America,” and Acknowledges the Election of Nathaniel Gorham 

Partly Printed Document Signed “John Hancock” twice IN TYPE as Governor of Massachusetts and signed “John Avery junr Secy” twice IN INK as Secretary of the Commonwealth, one page, 9.25” x 12.5”, on laid paper. Seal of Massachusetts is affixed on the upper left. Small loss at two fold intersections in blank areas and uniform toning along blank margins from prior framing. Fine condition.

In part:

“These are in the Name of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, to will and require you, in manner as the Law directs for calling Town-Meetings, to cause the freeholders and other inhabitants of the town of Sherburn duly qualified to vote for Representatives to the General Court of this Commonwealth, to assemble on Thursday, the twenty-ninth day of January current, to give in their votes for a Representative, who shall be an inhabitant of the district of Middlesex to represent the said District, in the Congress of the United States of America, to the Selectmen who shall preside at said meeting…” Signed at the conclusion by Hancock in type and by Avery in ink.

Beneath this is a second statement, also signed at the conclusion by Hancock in type and by Avery in ink. In full, “These certify, that the returns from the several towns, within the district of Middlesex respecting the choice of Representative, to represent the people thereof, in the Congress of the United States, have been examined agreeably to the resolution of the General Court, passed the twentieth of November 1788, by which it appears, that The Hon.

Nathaniel Gorham & Elbridge Gerry Esqrs have had the greatest number of votes in the returns from the said district, in which no person has been chosen.”Nathaniel Gorham, a Member of the Continental Congress in 1782, 1783, 1786, 1787, and 1789, and its President from June 6, 1786, to February 2, 1787, and a Signer of the Constitution, never served in the U.S. Congress.

Elbridge Gerry, a Member of the Continental Congress from 1776-1780 and 1783-1785, and a Signer of the Declaration of Independence, served in the First and Second U.S. Congresses (March 4, 1789-March 3, 1793) and as President James Madison’s Vice President (1813-1814)

In addition, we compare our shipping and handling rates against those of other auction houses, to ensure that our charges are among the lowest in the trade.
