Historical Background
Former Assistant Secretary of the Navy Franklin D. Roosevelt began visiting the therapeutic waters of Warm Springs, Georgia, in 1924, hoping to find a cure for the polio that had afflicted him since 1921. While swimming there, he felt an improvement and was able to move his right leg for the first time in three years. He returned every year, except in 1942, until 1945. In 1926, Roosevelt bought the resort property, and the following year organized a nonprofit foundation to operate it as a place for treatment of victims of polio.

Roosevelt returned to politics in 1928 and won election as governor of New York. In 1932, he won the first of an unprecedented four terms as President of the United States, but each year he returned to Warm Springs, where he had the Little White House cottage constructed in 1932. Shortly after returning from the Yalta Conference in 1945, Roosevelt traveled to Warm Springs late in March. While sitting for a portrait on April 12, he suffered a massive stroke and died later that afternoon.

Robert Lloyd Jones (1902-1982) was born in Northern Ireland. He immigrated to the United States in 1919 and settled in Minnesota. He married Mildred Eda Morgan (1908-1965) in 1927. By 1930, he was a caterer at a catering shop in St. Paul, Minnesota, where he lived with his wife Mildred and their son, one-year-old Robert Jr. They later had three more children. Jones lived in St. Paul for the rest of his life.
