Printed 46 page speech, signed, "Regards of J. L. Chamberlain", in pencil, as Governor of Maine, on front cover, 9" x 6", very good. The speech is the "Address of Governor Chamberlain to the Legislature of the State of Maine. January, 1868". Printed in Augusta by Stevens & Sayward, Printers to the State. Chamberlain discusses the devastating effects of the Civil War and how to make the state thrive again. Signature is light but legible. Cover is toned, text is clean.

Chamberlain fought for the Union at Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania and Cold Harbor. He was given the Medal of Honor for his Little Round Top, wounded at Petersburg. Brevted Major General USV in 1865 and mustered out in 1866. Elected Governor of Maine 1866-1871. He served as president of Bowdoin College until 1883, then went into private industry in Florida. As Major General of the Maine State Militia, he kept order during the disputed election of 1878-1879. Wrote about Maine and the Civil War, including The Passing of the Armies(1915).
