Description:

Bonaparte Napoleon 1769 - 1821 An impressive contemporary engraving of Napoleon, engraved the year he crowned himself Emperor of the French, ending the First French Republic

Engraving, NAPOLEON LE GRAND), (F. Gerard pint anon 1805./Augt. Boucher Desnoyers sculpt), 20" x 27.5" (by site), house in an impressively sized, plaster cast Empire period frame, with a framed size of 30" x 37". The c1810 frame has several spots of plaster loss, fine checking and scuffs, with some surface cracking of the plaster. Existing visible signs of restoration to the frame, with evidence of contemporary restoration to the gilt.

An elaborate regal portrait of the newly-crowned emperor, posing full length with all the symbols and trappings of royalty. Framed in a phenomenal, of the period, gilded wood and heavy cast plaster molded frame. Festooned with an elaborate decor of beading, lotus buds (representing victory in Egypt), acathanthus leaves, vases among others symbols often associated with Napoleon. The frame design is considered late Empire period, and is undoubtably of French origin. The Empire frames were favored by Napoleon and he often had them used to reframe the great works of art he looted during his conquest of Europe. According to a few frame dealers we consulted these elaborate peiord moldings often sell for between $2000 and $5000. A massive, dominate heavy piece which by itself would present regally on a wall.
