Gone With the Wind

A licensing agreement between Loew's Inc. and Volupte, Inc. of New York to permit the latter to benefit from the name of the motion picture, "Gone with the Wind" in advertising their brand of lipstick. Document signed by the Assistant Treasurer of Loew's(signature illegible) and the president of Volupte, "Fred Spitalny", 14pp with blue paper cover, stapled, 8" x 10". A mimeographed typescript dated January 12, 1940, near fine. 


An agreement where the licensor agrees to "sell and distribute for sale ... lipstick ... portraying various characters from said novel 'Gone with the Wind', and the motion picture based threron, and ... shall have the right to mark or label lipstick with the names of said characters and/or said title "Gone with the Wind", and to advertise the same under such title and such names."


Volupté, Inc. was a division of the Superior Products Corporation founded in 1920 in Elizabeth, N.J. It's later address was 347 Fifth Avenue, New York City. It was purchased by Shields, Inc. of Attleboro, MA in 1957 and ceased operations in the 1960s. They mainly produced compacts, perfume bottles, purses, jewelry, chatelaines, cigarette & and vanity cases.


Loew's Theatres Incorporated was founded in 1904 in Cincinnati, Ohio, by entrepreneur Marcus Loew. Loew founded a chain of nickelodeon theaters which showed short silent films in storefront locations. Soon the successful enterprise grew to include deluxe vaudeville houses and finally lavish movie palaces. Loew's theaters were found in cities from coast-to-coast, but primarily in East Coast and Midwest states.
