Meir Golda

Golda Meir Writes of "the needs of the times - the settlement of any immigrants who will take root in the soil of Israel and will establish flourishing villages"

Typed Letter Signed "Golda Meyerson" as Minister of Labor; she Hebraized her name to Meir when she became Foreign Minister in 1956, 1 page, 6.25" x 8.5". Jerusalem, Israel, April 12, 1955. In Hebrew, with full English translation. To Member of the Knesset, Shlomo Lavi, Ein-Harod. Two loose leaf holes in blank right margin. Fine condition.

In full, "Indeed the kind of pioneer to whom we were all accustomed to is no more, in any event not to a sufficient degree. Our quick action is not the result of any fundamental weakness, but on the other hand, it is the response to the needs of the times - the settlement of any immigrants who will take root in the soil of Israel and will establish flourishing villages. You, who are one of the great pioneers and are among the founders of the kibbutz concept, must believe and support the establishment of the Ta'anakh region, and when the call goes out from you, then the wonderful youth of the kibbutzim will also take on the task of establishing this region. In friendship…" Noted at the conclusion "Copy: Levi Eshkol. Finance Minister."

The Ta'anakh region was in Galilee near the Jordan frontier. From 1955-1956, six settlements were founded on 15,000 acres. Most of the immigrants came from North Africa.

In 1905, Shlomo Lavi (1882-1963) participated in Founding Convention of “Ha’Poel Hatzair” and in the creation of “Ha’Shomer” self defense organization. Lavi originated the idea of the “Big Kibbutz” and was one of founders of Kibbutz Ain Harod in 1921. Born in Plonsk, Poland, four years before David Ben-Gurion, Lavi and his fellow townsman were members of the Zionist “Ezra” organization. A member of Ben-Gurion's (and Meir's) Worker’s Party of Eretz Yisrael, Lavi served in the first two Knessets, from February 14, 1949 until August 15, 1955.
