Description:

Golda Meir TLS Regarding Reluctance to Become Foreign Affairs Minister and Her Wish to be Modest -- Superb!

A 1p typed letter in Hebrew signed by Golda Meir (1898-1978), then Israeli Minister of Labor, as "Golda Meyerson" (Meyerson was Meir's married name) at center left. Written in Jerusalem, Israel on June 15, 1956, on a single leaf of buff-colored stationery pre-printed with the Emblem of Israel at top. Double hole-punched along the right edge. Expected transmittal folds and a few extra wrinkles. Else near fine. 6.125" x 8.625." Accompanied by a full English translation.

Golda Meir wrote this letter to her friends Dvora and Shraga Netzer. Dvora Netzer (1897-1989) was a member of the Knesset, or Israeli legislature, between 1949-1969. Her husband was Shraga Netzer (1898-1985).

Meir wrote to the Netzers in part: "No one knows better than I how much I fear and do not want Sharett's job as Foreign Minister. This reminds me of my fear when I began my duties as Minister of Labor and received my official automobile. People said to me that it's a wonderful car, but I was worried about what they would say about me, so I made sure that the car would always be dirty, and how could I look the workers in the eye, and what the public, under austerity, would say: 'We're suffering and the Princess drives around in a car.' I'm sure you understand my feelings…"

Golda Meir was just three days away from beginning her tenure as Israeli Minister of Foreign Affairs on June 18, 1956. As she frankly states in this letter, it was a post that she did not desire. Yet Meir had been tapped to replace predecessor Moshe Sharett (1894-1965) as Minister of Foreign Affairs because her political values more closely matched those of Israeli Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion (1886-1973). Meir would head the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 1956 and 1966.

Meir functioned as Israeli Minister of Labor between 1949-1956 before serving as the 4th Prime Minister of Israel between 1969-1974. She was also a signer of the Israeli Declaration of Independence on May 14, 1948.
