Description:

Meir Golda 1898 - 1978 Foreign Minster Meir was surprised that Moshe Unna, a National Religious Party member of the Knesset since Israeli independence, allowed his name to be used as a supporter of an editorial in "New Outlook: Middle East Monthly," an Israeli publication founded five years earlier advocating Jewish - Arab coexistence.

Typed Letter Signed "Golda Meir" as Israeli Foreign Minister, one page, 8.5" x 11". Jerusalem, January 14, 1962. To M. Unna, member of the Knesset. In Hebrew, not translated. On official stationery blind embossed with the state seal at top center. Noted and underlined "Personal - Secret" at upper right. Horizontal fold lightly passes through "Meir." Two file holes at right margin. Docketing at top. Fine condition.

Foreign Minister Meir tells Knesset member Unna that she was surprised to see his name as a supporter of the editorial in the last issue of "New Outlook." She hopes he will follow some other Knesset members who stopped giving their names to this publication.

The "New Outlook: Middle East Monthly" was published in Tel Aviv. The objective of the journal was to serve "as a medium for the clarification of problems concerning peace and cooperation among all the peoples of the Middle East." In addition to its articles, the editorial board initiated a number of peace proposals. In 1967, several members of the board called for the creation of a Palestinian state including the West Bank and Gaza. The editors later awarded annually the New Outlook Peace Prize to Israeli Jews and Arabs who did outstanding work for Jewish-Arab coexistence. The editorial in the January 1962 (Vol. V No. 1) issue of "New Outlook" undoubtedly concerned a peace proposal.

Born in Germany, Moshe Unna (1902-1989) came to Palestine in 1927. He was a member of the first six Knessets (1949-1969), serving as Chairman of the Constitution, Law and Justice Committee (1951-1959, 1961-1969). Unna was Deputy Minister of Education and Culture in Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion's government from 1956-1958, except for two weeks in January 1958. He was one of founders of the Religious Kibbutz Movement and a member of its Secretariat (1935-1974). In 1962, he published " Real Partnership," a collection of articles about the religious Kibbutz. Politically, Unna served in the Knesset as a member of the United Religious Front (1949-1951), Poel Mizrahi (1951-1955), National Religious Front, Poel Mizrahi - Mizrahi, and National Religious Party (1955-1959) and the National Religious Party (1959-1969). He rejected the label given to his party by its opponents as "Mapai in a skullcap." Golda Meir, as well as her predecessors in government, were members of the Mapai Party which merged to form the Labour Party in 1968.
