Giuseppe Mazzini, Italian Nationalist, ALS from English Exile

1p ALS inscribed overall and signed by Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Mazzini (1805-1872) as "Gius. Mazzini" at center. No date besides "Sunday morning / 12. noo[n]". On cream laid paper. Expected wear including a few scattered folds and scuffs. Mounting traces verso. 3.5" x 4.375".

"Dear Davies

Can you, when you send to the City, cash this for me in five and ten pounds bank. notes? There is no hurry.   Ever aff.ly yours,

  Gius. Mazzini.

Sunday morning,

12. noo[n]".

Giuseppe Mazzini was a lawyer, author, and journalist celebrated for his leading role in the early Italian independence movement. Prior to Italian unification, Italy was a balkanized group of provinces ruled by multiple entities, including the Papal States and even foreign nations. Mazzini established Young Italy, a political club committed to Italian nationalism, In the 1830s. (The creation of this later sparked other clubs in the so-called Young Europe movement, including Young Germany, Young Switzerland, Young Poland, Young Turks…) Between the 1830s-1870s, Mazzini organized multiple failed insurrections in Italy, where he was tried in absentia and sentenced to death. He spent much of his life in political exile, hunted by the police. Though none of Mazzini's revolutions ever came to pass, he set the ideological stage for eventual unification as a republic. The independence movement known as Risorgimento, or "Resurgence," was secured by 1871--just a year prior to Mazzini's death.
