Description:

Giuseppe Garibaldi Bold Signature With 2 Original CDVs in Handsome Display

A paper slip inscribed in Italian and signed by nation-building revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882) as [translated] "Caprera 20 November 1860 / G. Garibaldi." A minor closed tear affects the second "G" of Garibaldi's signature, and there is edge discoloration to the paper at right, else very good to near fine. The paper slip measuring approximately 4" x 2" is displayed in a floating mount beneath two original sepia-colored cartes de visites depicting Garibaldi. The one to the left shows Garibaldi in a cloak and is associated with photographer Alessandro Pavia. The one to the right shows Garibaldi in his famous red shirt, armed with a sword; versions of this photographic sitting are attributed to photographer John Clark. Matted and framed behind glass. Not examined out of the frame. Measures 10" x 12" x 1" framed overall.

An early Republican, Garibaldi advocated for the unification of Italy. He was a partisan of the Young Italy movement and led the famous squad of revolutionaries called the Redshirts. Garibaldi signed this fragment, probably a clip from a letter, following his military campaigns of 1860. From May to July of that year, Garibaldi led the Expedition of the Thousand across Sicily, eventually wrestling it away from the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and declaring it for Victor Emmanuel II. He turned to the mainland that fall, ceding all of his territorial gains to his allies, the Piedmontese, following the Battle of Volturno on October 1st. Afterward, Garibaldi retired to Caprera, on the northern tip of Sardinia, where he had lived since 1854. (Garibaldi died in Caprera in 1882.)
