Gilbert Stuart 3rd ALS Re: a Portrait Sitting - Extremely Rare!

A paper fragment signed in the third person by celebrated American portrait artist Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) as "Mr Stuarts" in the first line. N.d. except "Wednesday Morng"; n.p. besides "Washington St." Also inscribed in Stuart's hand as "Mr Stuarts most respectfull Compl. to Mrs Wingate, he would esteem it the highest favour if Mrs W. would postpone her Sitting untill Friday morning." Expected wear to the paper fragment, including a rusted paper clip impression, a few collector's pencil inscriptions, and mounting traces verso. A typed transcription of Stuart's note is currently joined to the back of the paper fragment at the upper left corner. 5.625" x 3.625." Accompanied by a portrait of Gilbert Stuart after Asher B. Durand. Provenance: Ex-Noel Goldblatt (ca. 1926-2003) of the famous Goldblatt's Department Store, to a prominent Los Angeles, California collector.

"Mrs Wingate" was one of approximately 1,000 people who sat for Stuart portraits, from both sides of the Atlantic, over his 55-year-long painting career. Julia Cascaline Dearborn Wingate (1781-1867) was the daughter of U.S. Secretary of War Henry Dearborn. Julia married Joshua Wingate (1773-1843), a Harvard University graduate who later served as postmaster of Portland, Maine and collector of Bath, Maine as well as a Brigadier General in the Maine militia. Gilbert painted a portrait of Joshua Wingate as well, probably around the same time. Though no images of Gilbert's portraits of either Julia or Joshua could be found, they are listed as #931 and #930 in Lawrence Park's authoritative work, "Gilbert Stuart: An Illustrated Descriptive List of His Works," Vol. II (New York: William Edwin Rudge, 1926.)

Julia's father, Henry Dearborn (1751-1829); Julia's younger brother Henry Alexander Scammell Dearborn (1783-1851); and Julia's sister-in-law Hannah Swett Lee Dearborn (1783-1868) were also painted by Gilbert Stuart, the elder Dearborn around 1810 and the Dearborn children around 1812. One might speculate that Julia and Joshua's portraits could have been done around the same time, perhaps while Stuart was living in nearby Boston, Massachusetts between 1805-1828.
