Description:

Gilbert Motier Marquis de Lafayette
[Paris, France], n.d. but 1798 or after
"Gilbert Mottier Lafayette" Handsome Print from "Complete Collection of Historical Paintings from the French Revolution, In Two Volumes"
Artwork

A handsome and very finely executed mezzotint and line engraving depicting Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette (1757-1834). Ca. 1798 or later. [Paris, France.] The original artwork was done by French painter and draftsman Jean Duplessis-Bertaux (1747/50-1818), as indicated by the printed captions: "Duplessi-Bertaux inv. & del… Duplessi-Bertaux aqua forti" at center; while the engraving was done by Charles-François Levachez (active ca. 1760-1820), as indicated by the printed caption, "Levachez Sculp." at top. Trimmed and hinged at top to a stock card. Expected wear including even toning and isolated edge darkening; slightly wrinkled at upper right. Else crisp and near fine. 7.75" x 13.25."

The print shows a stylized, trompe-l'oeil medallion at top containing a bust portrait of the Marquis de Lafayette in military uniform facing left, above a frieze depicting a scene from "L'An 6 de la Répub." ["Year 6 [1797] of the Repub[lic]"]. A French-language biographical description of the Marquis de Lafayette can be found below, elaborating about Lafayette's role in the American Revolution, as well as his later service as a deputy in the 1789 Estates General, and as Commandant of the Paris National Guard.

This print was probably a plate excised from a once leather-bound copy of "Collection Complète des Tableaux Historiques de la Révolution Française, En Deux Volumes" ["Complete Collection of Historical Paintings from the French Revolution, In Two Volumes"](Paris: L'Imprimerie de Pierre Didot L'Aîné, numerous editions after 1798), specifically Vol. II, containing "Portraits des Personnages qui ont le plus marqué dans la Révolution, soit en bien, soit en mal…" ["Portraits of People who most impacted the French Revolution, either for good, or for bad…" Vol. II included biographical prints of 60 influential individuals including Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, Napoleon Bonaparte, and various generals, like Lafayette and Bernadotte.
