Description:

Gideon Welles Signed War-Dated Doc with Related Naval Doc Signed by Dupont

A pair of Civil War naval documents signed by prominent Civil War Era naval figures, Gideon Welles and Samuel Francis Du Pont. Both are war-dated, concerning various orders to subordinates. The pair have flattened folds, with light toning, soiling, and foxing throughout. Boldly signed by both men, overall, very fine. Includes the following:

1. "Gideon Welles" Signed Document. 1p of a bifolium, measuring 7.75" x 9.5", [New York] Naval Department, dated August 14, 1861. Addressed to Lieutenant Williamson aboard the U.S. Steam Sloop of War "Brooklyn" in Key West, Florida. Welles directs Williamson to return to New York aboard the U.S. Steamer "Connecticut" and report to the Department upon arrival.
2. "S.F. DuPont" Signed Document. 1p of a bifolium, measuring 7.5" x 9.5", Flag Ship "Vermont", Port Royal Harbor, dated July 22, 1862. Addressed to Commander J.H. Strong aboard the W.S.S. "Flag". Dupont sends copies of letters regarding an issue of leakage aboard the "Flag" and asks that further copies be made.

Gideon Welles (1802-1878), or "Neptune", as Abraham Lincoln affectionately dubbed him, served as Secretary of the Navy during the entire duration of the Civil War and into the Johnson administration. In the Lincoln cabinet, Welles focused on reorganizing a naval service riddled with Confederate defections and mobilizing recruits, vessels, and supplies. Throughout the war, Welles and his navy blockaded Southern ports, weakening an economy already overly dependent on cotton exports. Welles remained at his post until 1869.

Samuel F. Du Pont (1803-1865) was a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy and a member of the prominent Du Pont family. He served in both the Mexican-American War and Civil War with distinction, playing key roles in blockade operations. His reputation was tarnished, however, when he was controversially blamed by Gideon Welles for the failed attack on Charleston in April 1863.
