Gideon Wanton (1693-1767) was a governor of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations who served for two separate one-year terms, in 1745 and 1747. Wanton was admitted as a freeman to Newport in 1718 and had an active business life. Being fiscally minded, he was elected to the office of general treasurer in 1733, to which office he continued until 1744.

Col. Benoni Waterman (1701-1787) was born in Warwick, Rhode Island. He married Sarah Wicks (1700-1786) in 1724 and resided on family property in Warwick his entire life. Waterman was involved in the shipping trade with his brother. He was also involved in Warwick’s civil and military affairs, holding a wide variety of civic titles and militia ranks between the late 1720s and the late 1760s. Waterman participated in recruiting troops for an expedition to Canada during King George’s War circa 1745.

The Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations was one of the original Thirteen Colonies established on the east coast of America, bordering the Atlantic Ocean, founded by Roger Williams. It was an English colony from 1636 until 1707, and then a colony of Great Britain until the American Revolution in 1776, when it became the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations.
