Giacomo Puccini Sends a Note to Casa Ricordi, Music Publisher

Double-sided postcard inscribed overall in Italian and signed by Italian opera composer Giacomo Puccini (1858-1924) as "G Puccini" verso. Written on December 23, 1917 and postmarked from Viareggio, Italy the same day. Bearing a cancelled 10 centesimi Victor Emmanuel III rose stamp and addressed to "Carlo Clausetti / Casa Ricordi / Rerchet 2 / Milan." Minor chipped edges including one tiny area of loss, else near fine, measuring 5.5" x 3.5."

The "Cartolina Postale Italiana" postcard back is blank and has been inscribed: "A thousand good wishes to you, your wife and your children. Can you give me any news of Boito? Let's hope he gets better!"

Puccini's correspondent Carlo Clausetti (1869-1943) co-managed the Milanese branch of Casa Ricordi, a family-run firm of musical publishers established in 1808. The company was hugely successful for many generations. It distributed copies of popular works by Italian and international composers from regional centers like Florence, Rome, Naples, Palermo, Paris, and London. Casa Ricordi managed reproduction rights for major Italian composers Puccini, Verdi, Bellini, and Rossini in the nineteenth century. Clausetti had worked for Casa Ricordi since 1892. He was also a composer, librettist, and music critic.

Giacomo Puccini has been heralded as one of the best Italian composers of all time. He eventually eschewed more traditional romantic traditions in favor of more realistic portrayals, or verismo. Puccini enjoyed early success with La Boheme (1896), Tosca (1900), and Madama Butterfly (1904). Puccini's opera La Rondine had debuted in Monte Carlo just nine months before writing this postcard.
