Georgy Zhukov Promotional Letter to Senior Commissar 1940
DS

Georgy Zhukov (1896-1974). Top Secret USSR document, printed in Cyrillic, signed by Zhukov as Army General in red grease pencil, recommending the promotion of a Red Army senior instructor for organizational party work of the Political Propaganda Department to a senior Commissar in 1940, on the cusp of the Red Army joining World War II. 1p, 8" x 12", Kyiv, Ukraine, ca. 1940. Page shows toning with six puncture marks on the left margin and a small tear along the right edge, else fine.

Georgy Zhukov was a leader of the Soviet Union's Red Army, serving as a top commander during World War II. His military career began when he was conscripted into the Imperial Russian Army and fought in World War I. He then served in the Red Army during the Russian Civil War, after which he quickly rose through the ranks. In summer 1939, Zhukov commanded a Soviet army group to a decisive victory over Japanese forces at the Battles of Khalkhin Gol, for which he won the first of his four Hero of the Soviet Union awards, and in 1940, the year he signed this document, he was promoted to Army General and commanded the Soviet invasion of Bessarabia and Northern Bukovina in Romania. Zhukov went on to play a pivotal military leadership role in the Soviet's fight against the Nazis in World War II and he achieved a top rank of Marshal of the Soviet Union. He is remembered as one of the greatest Russian and Soviet military leaders of all time.
