[SLAVERY.] Thomas Waters Sr., Manuscript Document Signed, Bequests of Slaves to Mitchell Waters and Alexander Waters, August 4, 1848, Bulloch County, Georgia. Each recorded on August 28, 1848. 2 pp., 7.75" x 12.75". General toning; very good.

With this pair of deeds, Thomas Waters Sr., a veteran of the War of 1812 and planter in Bulloch County, Georgia, gives two of his young male slaves—six-year-old George and four-year-old Monday—to two of his grown sons. Thomas Waters died three years later.

Know all men by these presents that I Thomas Waters Sen of the county & state aforesaid have for divers good causes and considerations and for the natural Love and affection which I have and bear for my beloved son Mitchell Waters of the same place, I have given and granted & do by these presents give and grant unto my said son Mitchell Waters to him and his heirs a certain Negro Boy by the name of George about six or seven years of age, which Boy I consider worth four hundred dollars which sum I wish to be deducted out of Mitchell part at the division of my Estate and I the said Thomas Waters Sen do reserve to myself the right and controle and use of him the said Negro boy George during my Lifetime and at my death the said George is to be delivered to the said Mitchell Waters him and his heirs and assigns to have and to hold him the said George for his own proper use and benefit forever, and I the said Thomas Waters Sen will warrant and defend the right and tittle thereof against my Executors Administrators and assigns and against the claim of all other person whatever In Witness whereof I the said Thomas Waters Sen have hereunto set my hand & seal this sixth day of August in the year of our Lord Eighteen hundred and forty Eight

[The verso has an additional conveyance to "my beloved son Alexander Waters" on the same date for "a certain Negro Boy by the name of Monday about four years of Age which Boy I consider worth Two hundred dollars."]

Thomas Waters Sr. (1784-1851) was born in North Carolina to a Revolutionary War veteran and his wife. In 1805, he married Hannah Elizabeth Stewart (1787-1851) in Bulloch County, Georgia, and they had at least eleven children. During the War of 1812, he served as a private in the 1st Tennessee (Hall's) Volunteers. In 1850, he lived in Bulloch County and owned eleven slaves. Four of his sons and a son-in-law served in the Confederate army.

Mitchell M. Waters (1825-1880) was born in Bulloch County, Georgia. In 1848, he married Martha Little (1831-1866), and they had six children. In 1850, he was a farmer in Bulloch County who owned one slave, a seven-year-old male. In June 1861, he enlisted as a private in the 9th Georgia Infantry but was discharged in September 1861 due to disability. After his first wife died, he married Margaret Hendrix (1837-1922).

Alexander Waters (1818-1875) was born in Bulloch County, Georgia. He married Dora Ann Holloway (1820-1880), and they had ten children. In 1850, he was a farmer in Bulloch County and owned four slaves. In 1861, he enlisted in the 61st Georgia Infantry and was mustered out in April 1865, after surrendering at Appomattox Court House, Virginia. He returned to Bulloch County and resumed farming.
