Braque Georges

Georges Braque Signed Print

Black and white print, measuring 8.75" x 6.5", signed and dated by French artist Georges Braque (1882-1963) as "G Braque / 1961" in the bottom margin. The white-figure-on-black-ground print depicts a partly draped female nude standing next to a tall pedestal. On heavy-weight textured cream paper. The "9" of the date is slightly faded. Expected wear including minor wrinkles and edge chips, else near fine.

This scene, possibly inspired by Greek or Roman mythology, is unidentified. (Braque explored a similar subject--classical creation stories--in "Théogenie d'Hésiode," a series of 16 etchings commissioned by art dealer Ambroise Vollard in 1932, for example.) Braque began printmaking as early as 1907, and after 1921 had transitioned into lithography. He was a prolific printmaker throughout the 1930s-1950s.

Georges Braque was one of the most significant figures in the Cubist artistic movement, although he is often overshadowed by his contemporary Pablo Picasso. Braque undertook painting, printmaking, drawing, collage, and sculpture over his 60-year-long career. Heavily influenced by Post-Impressionist French artist Paul Cezanne, Braque became an acolyte of the Fauves, then storming the art world, with their bold colors and abstract forms. Braque's experimentation with geometric forms, flat planes, and simultaneous perspective made an indelible impression on Cubism.
