Description:

"George Washington" Sig, Framed with Hair Strands & Cloak Fragment

A small partial document signed by George Washington with an additional 8 words in his hand, displayed together with a few strands of his hair and a small swatch of fabric from his cloak.

One partially printed page, measuring 3.5" x 1.5", N.p., n.d. The document is clipped from a land deed and is signed, "George Washing[ton]. "The original "ton" from Washington's signature has been skillfully attached in the appropriate spot by using original writing from the same document and signature portion that existed on the next line of text. The document is accompanied by a PSA/DNA certificate of authenticity (which mentions nothing about the two-part signature and is a clean cert). The document has toning and moderate staining throughout.

Together with approximately twelve strands of his hair, the longest measuring approximately 1.5". The hairs range in size and are of dark and grey strand colors. The three are mounted and framed with a decorative plaque and a portrait of Washington to the overall size of 14.75" x 15.5". There is a scan of an LOA from handwriting expert, Charles Hamilton, for the authenticity of the hair.

A piece of his red cloak measuring 0.625" x 0.75. There are an additional seven scanned pages of provenance for Washington's cloak. A similar, smaller (1/2 the size) piece of cloth taken from the same cloak was sold in our June 2022 Auction for $4375. The fabric swatch is faded in the center and has slightly irregular margins.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
